Memorie di un concerto di Bill Haley and his Comets

Leggendo e curiosando qua e là si trovano spesso testimonianze interessanti di storie di vita vissuta, che – ahimé – in questa era in cui regna il concetto di usa-e-getta sono diventati perle rare, storie che vanno a perdersi nella notte dei tempi.

Tenendo in considerazione il fatto che un po’ tutti – ormai – tendiamo a scrivere cose (principalmente su Facebook) pensando che rimangano impresse per sempre in una sorta di diario/archivio digitale, in realtà dovremmo sapere che questi post andranno a perdersi come le mappe di vecchi immobili archiviate negli scaffali del catasto: staranno lì a prendere polvere per alcuni lustri, fino a sparire nell’oblìo, il giorno che la piattaforma Facebook chiuderà i battenti.

Ho deciso quindi di fissare qui, per sempre, una storia che mi è piaciuta molto e che voglio condividere con voi.

Oggi mi sono imbattuto in un post su un gruppo Facebook dedicato agli amanti del rock’n’roll chiamato “Keepin’ Rock’n’roll alive” e vi voglio regalare questa rara perla di un fortunato che poté assistere ad uno dei 4 show in programma a Dublino il 27 e 28 Febbraio 1957 presso il Royal Theatre.

Racconta Mr. Ted Carroll:

Just 63 years ago today on 27th & 28th February 1957 ~ Bill Haley & The Comets played 4 shows at Dublin’s 2800 seater Theatre Royal.
I was there aged 14 for the second show. Support act Vic Lewis and his orchestra had finished their spot opening the show. Now it was SHOWTIME!
The safety curtain rose, the red plush curtains swished back, revealing one last set of very pale pink chiffon curtains.

On this occasion, Bill Haley & The Comets opened their show with one of their hits ‘RAZZLE DAZZLE’
– Bill Haley sang “On your marks”
– Comets answer “On Your Marks”

The chiffon curtain jumps up about 18 inches.

We hear a rim-shot from the drummer.

– Bill Haley “Get Set”
– Comets “Get Set”

Curtain jumps up another 12”, revealing Bill & the band visible from the waist down.

– Haley “Now Ready!”
– Comets “Ready!”
– Bill “GO!”
– Comets “GO!”
Up goes the curtain to reveal Bill and The Comets, ranged across the stage, the entire audience goes APESHIT!!!!!

I guess that they only played for about 35 or 40 minutes, but it was enough ~ more than enough, all the hits ‘Rock a Beatin’ Boogie’, ‘Mambo Rock’, ‘See You Later Alligator’, ‘Rudy’s Rock’, ‘Rockin’ Through the Rye’, etc.
That great show launched me into a life of Rock’n’Roll!!

Ecco: questa è una di quelle esperienze che ti cambiano la vita.

Più o meno tutti nella vita abbiamo un evento rivelatore (a volte anche più di uno) che ci ha indicato la strada, quel percorso che ci ha portato anche ad essere le persone che siamo, credere in determinati valori, ascoltare un certo tipo di musica, voler far parte di un certo “mondo”, ecc.ecc.

Ecco perché voglio condividere con voi questa rara memoria: qualcuno a cui il rock’n’roll ha cambiato la vita, ha indicato la strada, un po’ come tutti noi che alimentiamo ogni giorno la nostra passione, ci racconta l’evento, la sua epifania. Con una storia da pelle d’oca.
